Due to the demand for services from women wishing to process their grief at the loss of their mother in a supportive group setting we are thrilled to announce the formation of an addition to our services! Beginning September 8 2017 we will begin offering a weekend intensive workshop four times a year for motherless daughters that is specially designed to meet the needs of their unique journey. This will be a collaborative effort with GroundNote Counseling and Nourishing Breath Yoga. For more information check out the website. Registration is limited to 6, so act now to secure your place!
How and when you lose your mother affects your experience of the loss greatly. Women who lose their mothers as children, adolescents or young adults often see themselves as "motherless daughters" because they have had to continue growing up without the presence of their mother and all of the support, love and guidance that comes with that. Women who had the experience of having their mothers with them into their mature years have a different experience with the loss. They often feel they had the benefit of their mother's love and guidance into their adult years, but miss their mothers acutely when they die. The death of their mother requires a significant life adjustment because they may have become close during their mother's golden years and they need to process the ending of that relationship and the honoring of their mother's legacy to them. I am currently putting together a group for Motherless Daughters which will meet on Thursdays from 7;30 to 8:30 and run for 12 weeks beginning in mid-March. The second group, which I am calling a "Motherloss Group" will meet on Mondays from 7:30 to 8:30 PM and will also start in mid-March. Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 206-227-6294. Cost of group is $40.00 per session. An intake is required and the intake fee is $80.00.
I am now doing intakes for a winter Motherless Daughter Group. It will begin in mid-January of 2016 and run for twelve weeks. Unlike other groups, this group will be focused on recent loss. Participants will be able to share their intense feelings of immediate loss with other women experiencing the loss of their mothers.
Therapy will focus on healthy coping, finding ways to honor and maintain a connection with your mother, getting through all the "firsts", and self-care. Activities will include some art therapy designed for grief and loss, and creative journaling. Email me at email@example.com or call 206-227-6294 with a message and a good time to return your call.
If you have lost your mother long ago or more recently and want to properly grieve her loss, process the impact it has had on you and create a path forward in your life where you have integrated your loss, then this group is for you. It is limited to four women and we use Hope Edelman's book as a foundation for the group. We share stories of mothers and loss, do art therapy projects to help you process the impact of the loss on yourself, and work to get to know more fully who our mothers were and how we are the same and different. Lastly we find ways to incorporate our mothers' presence into our lives in a way that feels comfortable and healthy. The group is 12 weeks long and meets Thursdays from 7:30 to 8:30. If you are interested email firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange for a free session to meet me and get any questions answered. The anticipated Fall 2015 Group start date is September 10.
We will be doing a new Reclaiming Your Life As A Motherless Daughter Group in January of 2015 and another one in April of 2015. This is a 12 week group designed to help Motherless Daughters grieve the loss of their mothers no matter how long ago in an empathic environment. It also assists with processing the impact of losing a mother on life and helps Motherless Daughters find a way to move forward in a way that integrates their loss and allows them to have a healthy connection with their mother's memory. The groups are limited to four women and they can fill up fast. More information about the group can be found on this website. Cost is $40.00 per session with an $80.00 intake fee. If you are in the Premera, First Choice or Group Health Options Networks we can likely bill your insurance. If you do not have insurance and need a sliding scale, that is also available. A free in person consultation is available if you are considering signing up for the group. Contact me at email@example.com or 206-227-6294 for more information or to schedule an appointment. I am looking forward to meeting you! Paige Tangney
Reclaiming Your Life As A Motherless Daughter 12 Week Group Is Now Forming!
“…Too soon, too sudden, the wrenching apart, that woman’s heartbeat heard ever after from a distance, the loss of that ground-note echoing whenever we are happy, or in despair.”
--Transcendental Etude, by Adrienne Rich
At GroundNote Counseling the goal of group counseling with motherless daughters is to restore the presence of the "ground- note" in their lives and thus reclaim their lives. Many women who attend this counseling group have never had the proper support to grieve the loss of their mothers. They also frequently have anxiety issues related to approaching the age their mother was at the time of death, emotional intimacy issues, a history of trying to fill the “big void” with drugs and alcohol and promiscuous sexual relationships. If they have children they are worried about the impact of losing their mother on their parenting. They yearn to have a connection with their mother but don’t know how to accomplish that.
During the 12 week group counseling program, women have the opportunity to grieve in an empathic and supportive environment. They are actively supported as they research who their mother really was as a fully human woman and examine which characteristics they carry of their mothers and which characteristics they don’t. They examine the life transition issues that occur as a result of losing your mother and discuss how they can manage those transitions without the support of their mother. They explore the “gifts” that come with motherloss and learn to take pride in their strength and independence. They build connections to their mother using incorporation of her traditions, and interests, and explore the possibility of spiritual connections. They also learn how to be open to and accept the "mothering" from other women in their life.
Groups meet on Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 8:30. An individual intake appointment is required. Rates are $40.00 per session and intake appointment fee is required. If you want more information or want to make an intake appointment call 206-227-6294 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
